Looking for a new evergreen holly to try? Check out ‘Red Beauty’. It’s a hybrid between three Hollies; Ilex aquifolium, I. rugosa and I. pernyi. It is similar to ‘Dragon Lady’ but ‘Red Beauty’ will grow wider and more compact, 7-10′ high x 4-5′ wide at the base. The deep, dark-green leaves are medium sized for a holly and very spiny which helps with its deer resistance. It has a conical-pyramidal shape and abundant red persistant berries. Need a pollinator on the property? The best choice is Ilex x ‘Blue Prince’. Good to know – hardiness is Zone 6.
