We’ve just brought down some compact Prairie Dropseed called ‘Tara’ from Watertown. The species (Sporobolus heterolepsis) grows to about 3′ but this cultivar has the same fine blades with a more compact habit, only growing about 12″. When in flower it can reach to 2′ with inflorescences that are pink and brown, and the fall color is a beautiful orange-red. Plant in the border with perennials or other grasses, or in large groups to make a statement. Great for along a walkway or patio.

Prairie Dropseed gets its common name from the small seeds that drop out of the husks. Plant them in full sun – once established they’re drought tolerant!
