Actually the official name of this Panicle Hydrangea cultivar is ‘Ilvobo’ but we call him Bobo, and short he is! Growing only 3′ high x 3-4′ wide makes it great for the front of the shrub border and a nice addition to the perennial garden. Need a good poolside plant? It makes a huge splash together with ornamental grasses! How about a one-plant patio container? Done.
So how did Bobo come about? It was the product of open pollination from a controlled breeding program in Belgium about a decade ago. It has a mounding habit with strong stems that keep the large airy flower heads upright which is great, especially for weathering our frequent summer storms. And it’s low maintenance – not much need for pruning except for cleaning up spent flower heads. Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist well-drained soil.
Don’t forget about the other smaller growing Hardy Hydrangeas. Check out ‘Bombshell’, ‘Little Lime’ and ‘Little Lamb’ on your next stop over.
