Each year the Perennial Plant Association picks a perennial “to showcase a perennial that is a standout among its competitors. Perennials chosen are suitable for a wide range of growing climates, require low maintenance, have multiple-season interest, and are relatively pest and disease-free.” This year the winner is Geranium x ‘Biokovo’.

Anyone that designs and maintains perennial borders has more than one ace in the hole when it comes to reliably good performers – and this Cranesbill may be one of yours. It’s a naturally occurring hybrid between Geranium macrorrhizum and G. dalmaticum. White flowers with pink stamens open in May and the frost tolerant foliage becomes tinged in pink and red adding to your fall palette. It has a spreading habit that forms nice mounds once established – perfect for the front of the perennial border. Plant in full sun to partial shade in average, well-drained soil for best results.

We always knew it was a winner and it’s great that they chose it – we’ll have a good supply sitting in both locations soon. Plant with Aquilegia (Columbine), Epimedium (Barrenwort), Iris and Heuchera (Coral Bells) to name a few. Check out the Perennial Plant Association for more information.
