When deciding on an evergreen for a full sun site, Juniper is one that often gets overlooked. They’re just the ticket for a low-maintenance, medium-sized evergreen complete with interesting berries, which attracts birds and tolerates a wide range of conditions including:

-heat and drought once established
-air pollution
-clay soils
-rocky, shallow soil
-salt & shoreline conditions
-deer
-cold (Zone 4)

Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka’ (aka Hollywood or Torulosa) seen here, has unique twisting branches on an irregular, upright form which gives it cool texture. This variety is a female form so there are plenty of berries for foraging birds. It will grow 15-30′ high x 10-15′ wide – big enough to use as a screen and distinctive enough as a focal point. Native to China, Japan and the Himalayas.
