It’s so easy to appreciate the show of color starting to appear with the coming of Spring. Red Maples along swampy areas on my way in to work are giving off a red hue to the tree tops with their reddish twigs and leaf buds. Star Magnolias (Magnolia stellate) are in full bloom and lighting up dark areas in the landscape. Walking through the tree blocks, my eyes went right to these fresh dug Cornus mas ‘Golden Golden’ – Cornelian Cherry Dogwood from our own fields . Their abundant bright yellow flowers emerge before leaves, making them an easy eye catcher. They provide all year interest with their scaly, exfoliating bark, dark green leaves that sort of curl in to themselves, and bright red fruit mid-summer. It would be great to see more of these used in the landscape!
