There’s no denying it – Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum) are true 4-season trees. In spring it’s the emerging new growth that catches the eye. The summer green or burgundy (sometimes bi-color) leaves add exciting contrast to any garden – plus the interesting dissected leaves offer lots of texture. The biggest splash comes in fall with impressive foliage in bright oranges, reds and golds. In winter their smooth bark and graceful framework of upright or weeping branches take the stage.

Most are hardy in our zone 5, are easy to plant, make great focal points, are deer resistant and require next-to-no maintenance. Plant in morning sun or partial shade to keep their thin leaves from scorching in the hot summer sun. It’s a plant you can count on year after year.
